Spidermania casts its web
Spidermania has landed following the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, eBay, the biggest online marketplace, has revealed.
Fans have been celebrating by snapping up an incredible amount of Spidey related kit in the lead up to the film’s release. The shopping destination currently has close to 75,000 items of new Spiderman products available to buy*.
The ‘web’-based kit includes nearly 25,000 pieces of Spiderman clothing, nearly 7,500 Spiderman toys and, for wannabe Peter Parkers, over 3,000 Spiderman suits. The most expensive item is a white gold and diamond pendant on sale for nearly £5,000.
The Spidey-frenzy hit the Sunday before the film’s release (Wednesday 16th April), with fans forking out nearly £10,000 on eBay.co.uk in just one day as sales of Spiderman-related gear an increase of 96% compared to the same day the month before**.
As with the rest of the comic book franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) swinging between the skyscrapers of New York. But this time he meets a formidable adversary in new villain Electro (played by Jamie Foxx), as well as having to fight off old foe the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan).
eBay Spokesperson, Laura Wilkinson-Rea says, “Spiderman is such an iconic superhero that people just want to own a piece of the legend. It will be interesting to see if we have the same spike in sales in the build up to the Ninja Turtles and Star Wars launches later in the year.”
