Turning a hobby or passion into a business is one of the keys to success for many eBay sellers. This trend holds true for father and son duo Caleb & Kim Devries. The pair co-owns RC Superstore, a family owned and operated hobby store that carries radio-controlled cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, helicopters, drones, and more.
Caleb and Kim have been remote control airplane enthusiasts for many years, ever since Caleb was just a young boy.
Through this hobby they found eBay and began using the platform as both buyers and casual sellers. In 2002 an acquaintance turned them on to selling the products online, prompting the opening of their eBay store.
“There is no way that we could operate successfully as a traditional brick and mortar store,” explains Caleb. “The exposure that eBay offers is great for our business.”
At first the venture was more of a hobby than a real business. Kim still had a full-time job and Caleb was just a teenager who had pursued the idea as an avenue to save money for the purchase of his own car. But the gig turned out to be quite successful and as Caleb grew older they stuck with it. Throughout college he continued to help his father run the business remotely, but after graduation he was unsure about his ability to successfully run a business with no real work experience under his belt, opting to take a corporate finance job instead. Until 2014, when he decided to pursue his passion joining his father in the business full-time.
Two years later Caleb and Kim have been growing their eBay business successfully and have expanded to other online channels as well. They consider themselves lucky to be able to pursue this dream. As the saying goes, choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.
