Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm to ever hit the Philippines, ravaged the central islands on Nov. 8 with winds up to 190 miles per hour, destroying homes and taking as many as 10,000 lives. The survivors are in desperate need of clean water, temporary shelter and food. eBay and PayPal rushed to facilitate donations for the organizations that are responding to the crisis.
PayPal mobilized by showing customers on the PayPal U.S. homepage and Account Overview page our donation appeal featuring eight of our nonprofit partners working in the region. PayPal Canada will soon launch an appeal to benefit Red Cross and the Humanitarian Coalition, a collaborative effort of Canada’s leading aid agencies to finance relief efforts for international humanitarian crises.
eBay also is featuring the nonprofit partners on our Giving Works page. In addition, the page displays products whose sellers will donate a portion of the final sale price (10 percent to 100 percent, as designated by the seller) to an organization working in the affected areas. eBay will credit seller fees in proportion to the amount the seller donates per completed transaction, with 100% of proceeds delivered to designated nonprofits. eBay Foundation will also be donating $100,000 toward relief efforts, split evenly betweenMercy Corps and Save The Children. The Foundation is also matching gifts by eBay Inc. employees.
eBay Inc. has more than 900 teammates in Cebu supporting Australia, North America and Global Buying Hub operations. All have been reported safe.
Aid experts predict that the Philippines will have a long road to recovery. Please join us in helping them on that journey.
