NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace and a leader in mobile commerce, and designer Jonathan Adler today open The eBay Inspiration Shop – a 24/7 shoppable storefront in New York City showcasing a collection of new, must-have merchandise for the fall season. The “always-open” store windows enable shoppers to browse and buy the very moment inspiration strikes, leveraging eBay’s mobile technology to shop anytime, anywhere, anyhow.
“Consumers today expect to shop how they want, when they want – and mobile technology is blurring the lines between online and offline retail to meet this demand”
“Consumers today expect to shop how they want, when they want – and mobile technology is blurring the lines between online and offline retail to meet this demand,” said Richelle Parham, chief marketing officer, eBay North America. “The Inspiration Shop brings to life how eBay enables people to immediately act on their passion for shopping in this new commerce environment. Collaborating with a creative visionary like Jonathan Adler helps us present this innovative experience in such a chic and compelling way.”
According to a new national survey on shopping commissioned by eBay, nearly half of shoppers want to make an immediate purchase when they find something they love (48%) and also enjoy browsing store windows for inspiration (46%). However, the majority cited frustration with traditional shopping experiences, particularly, long lines (57%), crowded stores (54%), pushy sales teams (52%) and lack of or limited inventory (65%). The survey findings directly informed eBay’s new shoppable storefront, which provides ideas and inspiration, and uses mobile technology to deliver immediate access and eliminate typical shopping aggravations.
Top trendsetters, including actors, designers, bloggers, stylists, editors, photographers, models and musicians, were tapped to help curate the items featured in the windows by sharing their shopping wish lists for fall. The incredible items represent what’s on their minds this season across Fashion, Motors and Electronics – from denim to digital cameras, engines to eReaders, and wrist watches to new wheels. Adler’s iconic prints and patterns – reimagined in eBay’s signature colors – serve as the merchandising milieu for the featured inventory.
“I’m dedicated to bringing style and joy to people through design, and working with eBay has given me a new way to inspire shoppers this season,” said Adler. “The chic choices from our contributors, coupled with the incredible selection available on eBay, resulted in a genuinely inspired storefront. And the fact that you can shop it all from your smartphone is truly groovy.”
Shoppers are invited to download the eBay app to scan custom Quick Response (QR) codes and shop similar items — available new and now — from more than 200 million listings on the eBay marketplace. The installation reinforces the shopping experience on eBay today: 62 percent of all listings are fixed price and 70 percent are new products. eBay’s suite of mobile applications have been downloaded nearly 50 million times, with three purchases made every second through mobile, showing a strong demand for shopping on the go.

About the Survey
The eBay shopping survey is a custom online survey conducted by StrategyOne between September 13 and September 16, 2011. The survey was fielded among a total of n=1,010 adults ages 18 and older across the U.S. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.08 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
