Wenig joined Re/code’s Editor at Large Walt Mossberg and Re/code’s Senior Editor Jason Del Rey at Code 2016 to discuss eBay’s trajectory and growth in the e-commerce landscape. Code 2016 is an invitation-only conference for top industry leaders and influencers. Hosted by Mossberg and Re/code Executive Editor Kara Swisher, attendees spoke in-depth about the impact of technology on our lives. Speakers included SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Wenig discussed eBay’s increased reliability in shipping and its strength as a business growing at a scale few companies have reached in digital commerce. He also shared some upcoming developments, including greater personalization and improved search.
When asked about competition from other e-commerce companies and start-ups, Wenig stated: “I’d rather have a billion unique items that arrive in three days than a billion commodity items that arrive in one hour.”
Taking questions from the audience, Wenig touched on eBay’s ability to use data to target customers more precisely, StubHub’s growth over the last year, and eBay’s expansion into the wine market.
